Doing Good Widens Your Core Circle and Brings Business To Your Doorstep

By Walter Goldman

waltergoldmanWe are often asked about ways to build a successful business. At least one answer may surprise you. Join a not-for-profit as a volunteer. Not just any not-for-profit. Join one that resonates with you, your passions, and your community.  Make sure you jump in with both feet, don’t look for anything in return, and believe in the cause.

When should I expect this to help me see definitive results?

You may not be able to pin your good deeds to generating revenue but giving back builds branding, it spreads the message about you, your business and opens doors to people and colleagues with like minded ideas and concerns. This is not a benefit that can be quantified.

We personally have made most of our most influential and strongest contacts by being part of a network of these people who give of their time, their money and their resources.

When people get together in an atmosphere of joint caring and giving, they tend to form bonds that cross over to their business interests.  Typically people volunteering with an organization share common values. They desire similar outcomes. They are vested in the same goals, and that motivation solidifies relationships.

Don’t believe us?

Come to any of a number of not-for-profit groups in this county that support under-served populations, whether it be food insecure, homelessness or fighting substance abuse and watch what happens. First, you will see the good work done by the organization and then you will be totally amazed at who it is that is offering to help. More often than not it’s an executive or business person who wants to participate in the betterment of the community she serves and lives in. We personally have made most of our most influential and strongest contacts by being part of a network of these people who give of their time, their money and their resources.

Not sure where to begin?

Grab a local newspaper, read the Rockland County Business Journal on-line or Google a cause you care about. We have organizations right here in Rockland  that feed the hungry, help abandoned animals, give respite care to those infirmed as well as help insure that a person have a place to go if a victim of domestic violence.

Want to grow a successful business? Do good. Give of yourself.
