Lake DeForest Reservoir Designated a State Landmark by the New York Chapter of the American Water Works Association
The New York Chapter of the American Water Works Association (NYSAWWA) designated Veolia’s Lake DeForest Reservoir a state landmark at its annual conference and awards ceremony on April 10 in Saratoga Springs.
The NYSAWWA’s State Landmark Award recognizes long-standing buildings, reservoirs or towers that have a direct and significant relationship with water supply, treatment, distribution or technological development.
“Lake DeForest and the production facility that supports it are among Veolia New York’s most critical assets,” said Chris Graziano, Vice President and General Manager of Veolia’s New York operations. “This six-billion-gallon reservoir provides drinking water to more than 300,000 people in Rockland County. In addition to being an essential source of water, it supports an expansive local ecosystem and provides for seasonal fishing and hiking for residents around the 3.5 square miles it covers.”
Lake DeForest was created to provide a reliable water supply for Rockland County’s growing residential and industrial communities. The construction of the reservoir began in 1952 and was completed in 1956. It was named after Benjamin F. DeForest, a former president of the Hackensack Water Company, which later became part of Veolia (formerly United Water and SUEZ).
Lake DeForest collects water from various sources, including the Hackensack River and its tributaries. Water is drawn from the reservoir and treated at an adjacent surface water treatment plant, which has an average treatment capacity of 10 millions gallons per day (MGD).
Over the decades, Lake DeForest has also become a popular recreational destination for the local community. Through Veolia’s Watershed Recreation Program, over 800 people register each year to access the reservoir for fishing, hiking and bird watching from mid-April through the end of November.
To celebrate the vitality of the reservoir as an indispensable resource, Veolia opens up the reservoir for community kayaking during its annual Veolia Lake DeForest Day. This event also features a kayak challenge between Rockland County’s local volunteer fire departments.
Veolia’s Annual Lake DeForest Day will take place on June 29.
Acorda Therapeutics In Pearl River Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy; Lays Off Entire Staff
The Pearl River-based Acorda Therapeutics, which manufactures key medications used by MS and Parkinson’s patients, plans to lay off its 97 employees in June, according to a notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor.
The biotechnology company cited bankruptcy and sale of the business in its WARN notice. Under New York law’s WARN Act ‒ or Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification ‒ a company must give the state early warning of any layoff that impacts more than 50 employees.
On April 1, the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of an asset purchase agreement with Merz Therapeutics, which is based in Germany and also manufactures medications for the treatment of movement disorders.
The plan is to continue operations while the sale with Merz is completed, according to a Business Wire statement posted by NASDAQ.
Burke Rehabilitation Opens First Rockland County Outpatient Facility in West Nyack
Burke Rehabilitation has opened an outpatient facility at 3 Centerock Road in West Nyack. This is the first Rockland County-based center for Burke, which is a national provider of physical and medical rehabilitation care. The company has a dozen locations throughout the tristate area.

The facility features LED lighting and a floor plan that utilizes natural daylight to reduce energy consumption, as well as water and energy efficiency features. Sustainable and low volatile organic compound (VOC) materials were selected for finishes and furniture.
