Tobacco-Free Housing Can Ensure A Safer, Healthier Living Space For All Residents

By Leilani Lockett

POW’R Against Tobacco is thrilled about the exciting new housing opportunities coming to Rockland County, providing much-needed affordable housing options for the community. These developments also present a vital opportunity to protect the health and well-being of incoming residents by establishing smoke- and vape-free living environments.

Smoking and vaping in multi-unit housing pose significant risks to lung health and diminish the overall quality of life, particularly for children, non-smoking adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Secondhand and thirdhand smoke contain a dangerous mix of toxic chemicals that can harm the lungs and cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of respiratory infections, asthma attacks, and even lung cancer. Indoor exposure to cigarette smoke is especially concerning due to limited ventilation, which leads to higher concentrations of harmful pollutants in the air.

POW’R Against Tobacco, a program funded through the New York State Bureau of Tobacco Control, looks forward to working alongside the Rockland County community to support the implementation of smoke- and vape-free housing policies in these new developments. Together, we can ensure safer, healthier living spaces for all residents.
