RCBJ is introducing its new “Price Tracker” enabling readers to see the effects on prices for various commodities from January 2024 through January 2025. The charts will be updated every month as data becomes available.
In January, grocery prices climbed 0.5 percent compared with the previous month, driven in large part by a nationwide egg shortage caused by an outbreak of avian influenza, or bird flu, which has pushed prices up 15.2 percent over the past four weeks. Egg prices are up 53 percent from last year. January represents the largest monthly increase in egg prices since June 2015, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the total increase in grocery prices since December.
Gasoline prices rose 1.8 percent over the course of the month, although they are down 0.2 percent compared to the same time last year.
The categories we are tracking are:
- Whole Milk
- Grade A Large Eggs
- Navel Oranges
- Tomatoes, Field Grown
- Ground Chuck, 100% Beef
- Chicken, Fresh, Whole
- Electricity Per KWH
- Gasoline, Regular Unleaded
- Unemployment Rate
