New Jersey’s Gas Tax Slated To Rise 2.6 Cents Per Gallon Next Year
The New Jersey Treasury Department has said New Jersey’s gas tax rate will increase 2.6 cents per gallon, effective Jan. 1, 2025.
The bump stems from legislation enacted earlier this year that renews the state’s Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) for five years, according to NJBiz.
The law calls for a gas tax increase annually over the next five years, as well as a new annual electric vehicle fee of $250. The TTF program is designed to provide nearly $11 billion to support dire state infrastructure improvements to roads and bridges.
The new law gradually raises the State’s Highway Fuel Cap from Fiscal Year 2025 through FY2029. The new statute set FY2025 at $2.03 billion — $84 million (4.3%) higher than the previous baseline level of $1.95 billion.
Under the law, Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio and Legislative Budget and Finance Officer Thomas Koenig must regularly review fuel consumption data and revenue collections – a process that just concluded. Projections expect FY2025 gasoline and diesel fuel consumption to come in at 0.6% above last year’s levels.
In a press release, the Treasury said, “What is generally called the ‘gas tax’ or the ‘highway fuels tax’ is actually two separate taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel – the Motor Fuels Tax and the PPGRT (Petroleum Products Gross Receipt Tax).”
According to the department, following the Jan. 1 increase in the PPGRT, drivers will pay a total tax rate of 44.9 cents for gasoline, 51.9 cents for diesel.
DECA Seeking Judges from Business Community
DECA, an international organization for high school and college students interested in business administration, marketing, hospitality, management and entrepreneurship careers, is seeking judges from the business community for its regional competition.
Students learn vital business information and are put to the test with a competitive events program, in which business and education professionals judge how well students can apply what they learn to realistic business situations.
The organization is seeking judges to share knowledge and expertise for its regional competition, the Region 3 DECA Competitive Events Conference, which will take place at Rockland Community College on Wed,, January 8, 2025 from 8:30am to about 1:00pm.
The event brings together more than 400 business and marketing students from around the area to “role play”.
“This is a great opportunity to network with other local business leaders and politicians as well,” DECA said in a press release. “We are looking at a timeframe of 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. to include a continental breakfast and lunch.”
DECA has competitive events in marketing, administration, finance, and hospitality. Prior to the day of the event, students will take exams to test business and marketing knowledge. During the conference at RCC, students will tackle business scenarios and role play them with professionals.
Students range from freshmen to seniors, some experienced in business classes, and others interested in finding out about business careers.
