Re-Opening Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Would Be Reckless And Irresponsible

To the Editor:

I was appalled, but not surprised, by Rep. Mike Lawler advocating, along with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, to reopen the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. The risks that the plant creates, backed by objective data, including documented leaks of radioactive water and the danger of storing nuclear fuel next to the Hudson River, are too large. With climate change increasing the risks of earthquakes (Westchester experienced one on March 10th.), an active nuclear power plant along a seismic fault line can lead to catastrophic failure, like Japan’s Fukushima’s nuclear plant.

I applaud Rockland’s legislators, Alden Wolfe and Beth Davidson, for protecting our safety and standing up to oppose this reckless plan. The risks I mentioned above, plus the difficulty in evacuating a densely populated area in an emergency and the exorbitant cost of safely trying to reopen this plant (which ultimately would be passed on to rate payers), are why their reasoning for opposing this plan is sound.

Rep. Mike Lawler, a former Oil and Gas Lobbyist, when criticizing Wolfe and Davidson’s response, talked about “spineless politicians… who are more interested in letting politics than science guide their policy decisions.” He could be describing his own actions including his vote to back Trump’s budget that eliminated funding for clean, sustainable (solar, wind, EV) energy sources.
