Former Bon Secours Medical Group CEO Named New Rockland County Health Commissioner
Dr. Mary Leahy, a longtime healthcare leader, has been named Commissioner of the Rockland County Department of Health.
In 2012, Dr. Leahy was appointed Senior Vice President of Physician Operations for Bon Secours Medical Group, overseeing more than 120 practitioners. In 2013, she was named CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System, where she set the strategic vision for system-wide operations, including three acute care hospitals, a regional home healthcare agency, and several long-term care facilities.
In November, nearly two dozen employees in long-time managerial and administrative positions were terminated from Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. At that time, Dr. Mary Leahy, head of Bon Secours Charity Health System announced her retirement for early 2025.
Dr. Leahy will earn $224,681 as Health Commissioner.
“Dr. Leahy’s extensive experience, coupled with her deep commitment to the health and well-being of Rockland County residents, makes her the ideal choice to lead our Health Department,” said County Executive Ed Day. “Her leadership will be instrumental in strengthening public health initiatives and advancing healthcare access for all.”
Dr. Leahy is a board-certified internist who has practiced medicine in Rockland County for over 30 years. She earned a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Boston College, and completed her internal medicine residency at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx, where she served as Chief Medical Resident from 1985-86. She furthered her expertise through a fellowship in nephrology at New York Medical College’s Westchester Medical Center campus.
Dr. Leahy established a medical practice, before co-founding Rockland Pulmonary & Medical Associates (RPMA), a multispecialty practice that is part of the Bon Secours Medical Group.
Dr. Leahy has been recognized by numerous organizations for her outstanding contributions to healthcare, including being named one of Hudson Valley Magazine’s Women in Business Award winners, Rockland’s Woman of the Year, and a NYS 2024 Woman of Distinction, nominated by Senator Bill Weber.
“I am honored to serve as Rockland County’s next Commissioner of Health,” said Dr. Leahy. “I look forward to working with our dedicated health professionals and community partners to enhance public health programs and ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare.”
Planners from the Hudson Valley and New York City Launch Regional Partnership
Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress (Pattern) and the New York City Department of City Planning (DCP) have formed a partnership to explore regional connections between New York City and the Hudson Valley on economic development, tourism, agriculture, and other key issues.
The partnership will include biannual meetings between Pattern for Progress and New York City officials, including discussions of how to build upon the robust economic ties and transit connections between the regions, and how to support jobs in life science, tech, food, and film production, among other industries.
“I am grateful that New York City has agreed to collaborate with the Hudson Valley to discuss a wide range of opportunities and actions that will benefit our regions,” Pattern CEO Adam Bosch said. “Pattern will coordinate routine discussions for civic and business leaders to connect with their peers in New York City. These collaborations will aim for specific actions on business attraction and growth, tourism, food systems, housing, transit, and other topics that stitch together the Hudson Valley and New York City. I want to thank Dan Garodnick (Director of the NYC Department of City Planning and Chair of the New York City Planning Commission) and his team at DCP for bringing the city’s government agencies and nonprofits into this active collaboration between our regions.”
The partnership kicked off with a discussion between DCP, Pattern, and the planning commissioners from several Hudson Valley counties, in which several topics for collaboration were chosen: economic development, tourism, agriculture, and other key issues.
“New York City and the Hudson Valley are deeply intertwined, from our housing market to transportation infrastructure to supply chain and more. When New York succeeds, the region succeeds, and vice versa,” said Garodnick, “That’s why this ongoing partnership is such an exciting opportunity to coordinate our planning efforts and further grow the largest regional economy in the western hemisphere.”
New York City and the Hudson Valley have strong economic connections.
The two regions include more than 267,000 commuters, and account for more than half the jobs and nearly 40 percent of the housing permits in the greater metro area. Several planning efforts have recently pointed toward the need to develop inter-regional strategies that strengthen and develop these connections.
Pattern will provide regular updates to Hudson Valley civic leaders about the regional discussions with New York City, including action items that are identified throughout the year.
