Increased Truck Traffic Has Made Mountainview Avenue More Dangerous
Dear Editor:
I have been living on Mountainview Ave. for the past 20 years and it has never been as dangerous as it is now for cars and pedestrians.
Day and night cars, motorcycles and trucks careen around the curves on this narrow town road as if they were at the Indianapolis 500. Trucks, including semis (which cannot be legal) negotiate this road as if it was an Interstate. During the winter months, it is downright hazardous because of the micro-climate that exists on most of the road.
A policeman responding to an accident by my house last year even said to me that the road should be closed during the winter months because of how treacherous it is!
What is to be done? Clearly a hefty $200 speeding ticket would help but the offenders have to be stopped and ticketed. Sophisticated speeding monitoring equipment exists that could clock how fast cars are going and even register the license plate associated with the speeding car. Why can’t this be installed on our road? What about speed bumps in strategic places?
Where are the signs that could alert drivers of punitive fees if caught? Where are the signs inhibiting semis from using this road?
Walking on Mountainview Ave. is life-threatening. There is a small sidewalk between Route 59 and the condominiums but after that you take your life in your hands. Walking to the New Bear Swamp park is so hazardous that I do not walk there from my house.
Moreover, the bridge over the NYS Thruway is in such disrepair that a really tragic accident is going to happen there eventually. How are people able to walk to the bus stop on Route 59 when the cautionary orange markers inhibit anyone from getting there unless they walk on the road itself?
Our taxpayer dollars need to be spent to protect the taxpayer! Please address these concerns. Our lives are in your hands!
